Tonight “So You Think You Can Dance” crowned a winner. Along the way, they had some amazing live performances from Leona Lewis, Adam Lambert, Mary J. Blige and Jennifer Lopez. Video below.
First up was Leona Lewis performing “I See You,” the theme from James Cameron’s just-out-this-week “Avatar.” It’s basically the 2009 version of “My Heart Will Go On,” a soaring theme with lots of big notes for Ms. Lewis to belt with emotion but not quite as saccharine as the theme from “Titanic.” We approve, as far as big movie themes go.
Up next was Adam Lambert with “Whataya Want From Me,” the second single released from his “For Your Entertainment” album. We are big fans of this song, it manages to have a rockin’ part and show off his crazy vocal ability while still being a ballad for most of the piece. Lambert was back to his “Tracks of My Tears” gray suit look, which is nice. Except what is that lurking on his shoulder… GIANT SPIDER! Run, Adam!
The third live performance was Mary J. Blige singing “I Am.” It was great — is Mary J. Blige secretly a vampire? The woman doesn’t age! She looks fabulous! Her ninth album, titled “Stronger,” drops on Monday, Dec. 21.
Finally, Jennifer Lopez did her song “Louboutins” from atop a giant shoe-bed. She actually left the shoe-bed after the opening where she called Santa, but it was still funny. She also managed to not fall down, so good for J-Lo.
The performance was very good, with Lopez sporting a sparkly silver dress and her backup dancers sporting tuxedos. Later she swapped the tuxedo-d men for some Rockette-type women (made up of former “SYTYCD” dancers). We much prefer the Christmas-themed “Louboutins” to the boxing-themed “Louboutins” from the American Music Awards.
There were also performances all night of the favorite dances throughout the season. Those were fabulous as well.
