‘Nip/Tuck’ says a quiet goodbye

The series finale of “Nip/Tuck” is Wednesday night. If you haven’t been watching FX in the past week, would you have known that?
What was once one of television’s most buzzed-about shows is saying goodbye Wednesday (March 3) with little of the fanfare that’s accompanying, say, the final season of “Lost,” or even the end of “The Shield” on FX in November 2008. So how come?
In part, it’s simply a function of age. “Nip/Tuck” has been on the air since 2003, and like most shows that have been around that long, it’s lost some of its luster. Take away the sex and the surgery, and the show is essentially a family drama, and shows like that are exceedingly tough to sustain over such a long haul.
