lily-tomlin-damages-320.jpgThe fifth episode of “Damages’” third season offered more clues about Tom Shayes’ death, some weird and disturbing images from the mind of Patty Hewes and our first extended look at Lily Tomlin as Marilyn Tobin, wife of the now-dead investment fraudster Louis Tobin (Len Cariou).

Tomlin, who joined “Damages” creators Todd and Glenn Kessler and Daniel Zelman on the show’s weekly day-after conference call, is a huge fan of the show and sys it “wouldn’t have mattered” what role the Kesslers and Zelman had written for her, so long as she got to be part of the show. She and the guys talked about Marilyn’s motives, what she might be hiding and what we can expect to see from her later in the season.

Would Marilyn do anything to protect her family?
Tomlin: Possibly. Protecting her family is important, certainly. It’s probably her main motivator. How far she’d go, I couldn’t possibly discuss — we’re just now coming to the end. …

I think a little bit of a lioness comes up [in her], because it is extremely important to her to salvage this life she’s had. When that real fierceness comes to protect her family and her children and grandchildren, I think she could start thinking strategically in terms of that. … I think there’s a lot to Marilyn that may not meet the eye, but she’s still a mother in the situation of seeing her children potentially destroyed. She’s going to do whatever she can to keep them safe.

What’s her relationship with family lawyer Leonard Winstone (Martin Short) like?
Tomlin: I think she’s always been somewhat close to Leonard. Because my husband conducted most of the business, he probably had a more direct paternal-like relationship with Lenny. Now that Louis is gone, I’m thrust into that a little more. … I think on one hand, Lenny’s been like family and like a son to me in some ways. But maybe as things unravel … I think our relationship evolves. There’s a lot of information each of has or doesn’t have, and whether we fill each other in or not.

What’s in Patty’s head right now, given her weird dream with Uncle Pete and the horse?
Zelman: The events of the first season opened something up in Patty that perhaps she didn’t want to have opened up. In the first season we saw her go to extremes … a lot of that had to do with Ray Fiske [Zeljko Ivanek] shooting himself in front of her. That even cracked something open in Patty. From that point on — she goes on that long road trip, which ultimately is a trip back into her past. In season 2 she’s still in that place where occasionally things from her past come back to haunt her. What that dream was and what those images were are coming to her from her past. At the end of the seaso
