The new Jennifer Lopez romantic comedy “The Back-Up Plan” was No. 1 on Friday (April 23), according to estimates. But Dreamworks’ dragon flick could end up slaying its way into the top spot by the end of the weekend.
“Plan,” opening domestically on 3,280 theaters, brought in an estimated $4.2 million on opening day. However, Paramount’s “How to Train Your Dragon” (now in its fifth weekend) was close behind with about $3.7 million — and matinees could help it take the weekend title.
Coming in next was Fox’s Carrell-Fey comedy “Date Night,” in its third week out, with $3.3 million.
Another new release this weekend, “The Losers,” trailed slightly behind in fourth. The PG-13 flick starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Zoe Saldana and Chris Evans, brought in $3.2 million.
“Kick-Ass” box office numbers continue to shame its title, being anything but ass-kicking. In its second weekend, the Lionsgate film pulled in $2.9 million.
